Art. Stories. Perspectives.
Variant Space is a ground breaking collective of Muslim female artists who have come together with one aim, passion and love: the arts.
For the first time ever, Muslim female artists from around the globe have come together to narrate their stories and journeys. In doing so, they showcase the tones and shades of talent that exist within the Muslim female community all around the world.
Our philosophy is embedded in our very name. It is influenced by the notion that there are differences in things which appear to hold similar forms. Variant Space is one tapestry, woven together by different threads, with each thread representing the individual artist as a unique and open-mined woman. It is with their paintbrushes, cameras and the weaving of words that the Variant Spaces artists also strive to shatter stereotypes of the Muslim woman, which have become so entrenched overtime.
Variant Space provides a new and refreshing arena for the discourse on the Muslim woman, as well as a platform from which female Muslims can speak about their experiences through their art and reclaim control over their image.
As well as showcasing the work of female artists, Variant Space endeavours to nurture the talent of emerging artists, provide support and exposure and encourage them to pursue their art. We also aim to facilitate a conversation with those interested in the arts, to inspire learning, curiosity and exploration. It is through the arts that we hope Variant Space can give individuals the chance to step back and a take a second glance at the world around them.
Variant Space was founded in 2014 by two artists, Nasreen Shaikh Jamal al-Lail and Nasreen Raja who were brought together by their passion for art. If you’re enthusiastic about the arts and creativity and would like to get involved, or simple want to say hello and tell us what you think about our projects and our artists, we would really love to hear from you, so get in touch.
